Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals said the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.

Service Response and Material Removal

According to TikTok, the service has taken down violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or injecting at residence.

After minutes of joining one group, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these groups, posts show black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these digital versions may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has previously seen individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly significant health risks”.
