Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
