Around twenty-five thousand residences in south-east Queensland were left lacking electricity on Monday morning after intense storm systems impacted the area, producing wind gusts hitting over 100 km/h.

Utility workers were focused on reestablishing power throughout the affected regions, with dozens of response units working to handle the widespread outages.

Southern State's Storm Challenges

Simultaneously, nearly one thousand energy customers in Victoria also experienced power outages after the metropolitan area saw its heaviest rainfall in 18 months.

State Emergency Services received 598 requests for assistance across the region, mainly for property damage but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

Most Impacted Regions

  • Werribee - recorded significant weather impact
  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - various rescue reports
  • Wyndham - nearly 180 calls for assistance

At one point on yesterday, more than twenty-eight thousand energy customers in the state were lacking electricity.

Meteorological Predictions

Moist weather were predicted to continue along large portions of Queensland's east this week as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

The following day was forecast to be the heaviest precipitation period, with ongoing severe weather risk predicted across different parts of both areas.

Health Warning

Public health experts cautioned that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the northern rural areas, especially given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This alert comes after historical occurrences where analogous circumstances led to major medical consequences in the area.
