Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Speculation as Pure Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh talk linking him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours about his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in June 2024, has a contract running through the end of the decade, with a possible extension available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Tensions After Recent Comments
Maresca's most recent comments come after he referred to a recent 48-hour period as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had sparked considerable speculation of a potential disagreement between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we speak about various topics. But about the Everton press conference, no."
The manager however affirmed he would definitely stay at the club next season and urged supporters to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an unhealed issue that continues to create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the situation publicly, there has also been no apology offered, leaving the disagreement unresolved.
The mood during these press conferences has grown increasingly strained, leading to concerns it could undermine what has up to now been a decent beginning to the season.
Chelsea's on-field position is strong: they are fourth in the league, have reached the League Cup last four, and can achieve a favourable European draw with good results in their remaining matches.
